An Interview with Vadim of Gammera

Gammera... If you haven`t heard them you should. These cats are some of the heaviest musicians around right now. Being a fan I recently spoke with Vadim, the drummer and asked him a few of my standard questions I ask all my favourite bands when I first meet them... If you have a chance, check out the song in the jukebox here. Their sound is crushing...

Rob: How did it all start?

Vadim: Scott wanted a band, and I wanted a band. We met and liked the same stuff. We had a bass player who liked other stuff than bass, so my friend of 20 years, Clint came up from LA to play with us. Our singer liked drugs more than being in the band, so Scott started to sing. Gammera liked a full sound, and Scott liked some freedom to sing so we asked out new friend Rafael to join.

Rob: Some of your favorite bands that you have played with and like...

Vadim: Hmmm... Acid King, Slayer, Nebula, Kyuss, AC/DC, woodpecker, Barkmarket, Herbert, Jesus Lizard, Men Of Porn, Metallica, Four Stroke Donkey (the volcom leatherchicken is the best), Maceo Parker, Mozart, like, Things played with conviction, Coltrane, Hendrix, Electric Wizard, Fudge Tunnel, Charlie Hunter, DEVO, That Sabbath band, Minor Threat, The Jazz Messengers, The Sea Hags, Michael Jackson, The Dead Kennedys, Leonard Nimoy, High on Fire.

Rob: Stonerrock...

Vadim: It is a term that defines a movement that seems to be getting out of our control. It`s kinda funny, because many of the `stonerrockers` I have met are not `stoners`. It seems too broad of a category, giving illusions of long haired male burnouts chewing tasty sonic bits in their head like mental gum. Most of this music spawned from some form of punk meeting with some form of metal, and luckily avoiding bad rap. Hopefully it will remain amorphous and blend into the baggy pants rocks scene, as well as the retro 80`s movement. Then again, I don`t really give a damn.

Rob:Is the album coming out? Could I get a copy for review???

Vadim: The album is coming out. The Promotional Device CD has been so requested, I haven`t had enough time to finish the final touches. The album will hopefully show all facets of our style. You will definitely get a copy for review.

Rob: You guys seem to like the gear, pretty seriously...give me the low down on guitars and amplification...and Drums...

Vadim: Here goes... Clint: Modulus (Scotty) customized G&L bass. Bartolini bridge, G& L mid position. 1 Ampeg classic SVT reissue head, 1 SVT-4 limited edition all tube head, 2 SVT 8x10 cabs, sometimes a Big Muff, also a customized Fernandez Tele bass TEB-2 Rafael: Black Gibson SG, Dark Raspberry colored Les Paul, 100w Plexi marshall head, 1 80`s solid as fuck Peavey 4x10 cab, 1 Marshall JCM series straight cab. A Boss delay pedal, and a rare Jimi Hendrix fuzz. A buncha secret shit in the studio. Scott: Burgundy 62 reissue SG, Modulus custom (built by Scott), Hiwatt 100 lead amp. Tech 21 XXL distortion, Matchless HotBox, some other crap, but not much. Oh yeah, two Marshall 4x12 cabs, whichever ones haven`t shorted or shaken themselves apart. (we`ll change our story as soon as the endorsements happen) Vadim: Ludwig toms and snare. 13", 16", 14"x8" colesium snare in white, also a 14x7" Tama bronze snare. 26" Yamaha Recording Custom kick drum. 19" Zildjian A crash, 20" Zildjian A medium crash, 22" Zildian A Custom Ping ride, 24" Zildjian A ride, Zildjian 14" New Beat Hi Hats. Don`t buy any of this shit unless they start to give it to us for free! I don`t believe in endorsing gear that was not provided to us, you should check out Modulus and Aquarian drumheads. They are actually the secret to the Gammera tone, besides our non official endorser, Budweiser.

Rob: Songwriting... Hows it done, collectively or is their one song writer...just how it`s done...

Vadim: Collaboration mainly, sometime, one jerk has a riff, but otherwise we argue a lot.

Rob: Any upcoming Tours...

Vadim: Luckily for Limp Brisket we are waiting `til September for our tour. We are heading out with San Francisco favorites Lost Goat and the Argentinean connection Natas. We`ll hit SoCal, Phoenix, Vegas, Tahoe, and then the Pacific North West. Watch the list and our website for the dates.

Rob: You guys beer drinkers...pot smokers...

Vadim: Beer, occasionally, when our mothers say it`s okay. On thanksgiving my dad lets me have a half a glass of wild turkey. Pot smoker? We usually use the smoker Scotts dad has to prepare the fish we caught. It`s not pot style, but it has several trays, oblong shaped.

Rob: Are you guys all from the Bay area or did you move...little personal background

Vadim: Clint is from Texas. When his cattle rejected him, he decide to spend the 5th grade in California. Clint started drawing pictures of demons with Me in 5th grade because everyone thought they were strange, but kind cool. By age 27 Vadim wasn`t that cool, but Scott was weird and 19. The music was cool. Clint was convinced by the year 1998, chemistry outweighs time. Rafael came and added a true trained musician to the mix.

Rob: Anything you would like to say to the community members @Stonerrock.com???

Vadim: Go see live music, If you download an MP3 you like, go buy the record, Electric Wizard will never get money from Napster to tour the US (I really want to see them!). Thanks for coming to the shows and please say hey when you do. Even Dave Wyndorf would make a better US president than those two asses. A stitch in time saves NINE. Nativity in Black II is pretty lame except for a couple of tracks, Record on analog tape, Wash your bellybutton. Be nice to your dog, he could die and he is loyal.

Rob: How would you describe your sound...you don`t have to say it`s like a cross between this, or anything...just how you would describe it you know???

Vadim: We always strive for a HEAVY tone. It`s usually ear blistering loud, but it may be soft and scary. We always want to be HEAVY, one way or another. Mostly low end, but trying for space too.
